אנו גאים להציג בפניכם ראיון שמועדון סטארבייס 972 ערך עם צ'ייס מסטרסון שגילמה את "ליטה" ב"מסע בין כוכבים: חלל עמוק תשע".

נתחיל בהסברים שאנו חייבים לכם – הזמן הרב שעבר מהפעם בה הודענו לראשונה על הראיון ועד היום לא נבע מסיבות התלויות בנו, חלילה. כמו שתבינו מהדברים שתקראו – רצינו להציג את הראיון כבר במהלך כנס "אבק כוכבים" שנערך בפסח, אך בשל לוח הזמנים העמוס של צ'ייס מסטרסון, הדבר לא יצא לפועל. מסטרסון ענתה על מספר שאלות מאלו ששאלנו אותה והבטיחה שתענה על השאר בהקדם האפשרי.

בבוא היום, כמובן, נביא לכם את השאלות והתשובות האחרות.

סטארבייס 972: שלום לצ'ייס מסטרסון, אנחנו שמחים שאת איתנו כאן.

צ'ייס: תודה לכם כל כך, subatoi והצוות. אני רק רוצה להגיד שאני נורא מצטערת שלא כתבתי מוקדם יותר. האמת היא שהייתי מחוץ לעיר בשבועות האחרונים ולא ידעתי שרציתם את הראיון לכנס הפסח שלכם: "אבק כוכבים". מצורף בזה לינק לעיסוקי הנוכחי: קידום סרטי החדש שנקרא "יצור לא נודע" (Creature Unknown) בו אני מככבת בתפקיד הראשי.

השבוע, בנוסף, הייתי מחוץ לעיר כדי לשיר בסרט חדש שנקרא "טייק אאוט" (Take Out). אני שרה הרבה לאחרונה, בייחוד שירים מתקליטי החדש: "ריגוש המרדף" (Thrill of the Chase) (צ'ייס באנגלית = מרדף, ו.ק.). בכל מקרה, הסרט הזה עוסק בתעשיית המזון המהיר וכמה שזה לא  בריא, במיוחד באמריקה. אני שרה שיר שעזרתי לכתוב אותו. אני מקווה שתאהבו, אם תשמעו אותו.

בכל מקרה, אני מטיילת כל כך הרבה והיו לי עיסוקים רבים, אך בכל זאת אני רוצה להתנצל עמוקות שאני באיחור מוחלט עם הראיון משרציתי. התנצלותי השנייה היא על כך שאיני יכולה לכתוב בשפתכם. אחי כומר ומדבר קצת עברית ותמיד רציתי ללמוד. מכל מה שאני יודעת ולמדתי, ישראל היא ארץ נהדרת ואנו מקווים לבקר בה בזמן הקרוב ושיהיה שלום. אני מתפללת שיהיה לכם, מגיע לכם.

סטארבייס 972: ליטה החלה כדמות של ארבעה משפטים ונשארה לחמש עונות. מה דעתך על הדרך בה היא התפתחה?

צ'ייס: אני מרגישה שבורכתי על כך שליטה התפתחה, מנערת דאבו שעובדת קשה לאשת הנגוס הגדול. אני חושבת שהכותבים עשו הרבה בחירות סטייל "מסע בין כוכבים". למרות שליטה החלה כמאוד נשית ופלרטטנית ב-Explorers, יש לה חמלה כלפי רום והיא עמדה לצד האיגוד ב-Bar Association. ואז ליטה עשתה מעשה חכם בכך שעזבה את ד"ר באשיר, הרופא הבריטי המשגע, והתאהבה ברום, שהוא יפה רק מבפנים. הכותבים של "מסע בין כוכבים" אוהבים שה"אנדרדוג" (סלנג אמריקאי לאדם שהכי מגיע לו ולא מצליח) ינצח, ואני חושבת שזה דבר שכולנו רוצים.

קוורק לעתים קרובות אוהב לרדת על ליטה ולהעליב אותה על היותה חסרת מוח. אבל לכל אורך יחסיה עם רום, היא עשתה בחירות חכמות כמו לחלוק כסף, להיפרד מרום ליום שלם לפני החתונה וכו'. אני שמחה על כך שאני יכולה להראות שלמרות שליטה היא "רק נערת דאבו", היא  אינטליגנטית ויש לה יכולות, בנוסף לחמלה ועומק – דברים החשובים גם כן.

סטארבייס 972: האם היית משנה משהו בליטה או בחייה, לו הייתה לך ההזדמנות?

צ'ייס: אני חושבת שלו היה אפשר להתקדם עוד בדמותה של ליטה, זה היה יכול להיות נהדר. אבל לכותבים קיימת הגבלת זמן והם יכלו להתעסק עם כל דמות עד גבול מסויים לפני שהסדרה  הסתיימה. הייתי מתלוצצת על כך שאולי היא אפילו תהפוך ל"קפטן ליטה" – היו כבר דברים מוזרים מזה ב"מסע בין כוכבים" (-;  מי יודע, אולי רום וליטה יופיעו ב"אנטרפרייז"?

סטארבייס 972: יש משהו שאת מתגעגעת אליו בעבודה ב"חלל עמוק תשע"?

צ'ייס: אני מתגעגעת לצוות והשחקנים מאוד מאוד. זו הייתה קבוצה נפלאה שעבדה ממש טוב ביחד. לרוב הצוות יש היסטוריה משותפת עוד מימי "הדור הבא". הכימיה שבין הצוות לשחקנים הייתה מאוד מיוחדת ומייחסים למפיקים הרבה הצלחה בבחירת אנשים שבאמת יודעים לעבוד ביחד.

אני גם מתגעגעת לעבודתם של האחרים, בדיוק כמו שאתם (המעריצים) מתגעגעים אליהם. היה ממש כיף לצפות בארמין (שימרמן, "קוורק"), ומקס (גרודנצ'יק) היה גאוני בתור רום. הייתי נשארת עד סוף יום הצילומים כדי  לצפות בעבודתם של האחרים. אפילו אם סיימתי בעצמי, ואפילו אם הגעתי לסט הצילומים ב-4 בבוקר, שזה הזמן שבו אני מתיישבת להתחיל באיפור.

סטארבייס 972: מה הפרק בהשתתפותך האהוב עליך?

צ'ייס: עוד לא הגעתי להחלטה סופית בעניין.

סטארבייס 972: בדרך כלל בטלויזיה או בקולנוע, הדמויות יפות והם מוצאים בעל/אישה דומים. רום הוא שונה, הוא בדרך כלל שם כדי להצחיק אותנו. הוא לא היה יפה (בעיקר כי הוא פרנגי) וגם לא היה חכם במיוחד. איך את מסבירה את החלטת המפיקים לחבר בין שניכם לזוג, למרות כל הנ"ל?

צ'ייס: אני חושבת שהמפיקים פשוט הלכו על הלא צפוי. ואני חושבת שזה עבד נהדר – הן מהבחינה הדרמטית והן מהבחינה הקומית. אם ליטה הייתה נשארת עם ד"ר באשיר, זה היה משעמם. אני חושבת שזה היה יותר מדי בסגנון "ברבי וקן", אתה מבין?

כמו כן, כמו שאמרתי, בשביל רום להשיג בחורה, ועוד אחת שהייתה עם הרופא, זה דבר משעשע שאף אחד לא צפה. רום נראה מפחיד, אבל מה שחשוב אצל מישהו זה הבפנים, ואני שמחה שהמפיקים בחרו לשים על כך דגש. רום נזקק לקצת ביטחון עצמי כדי להגשים את עצמו, ואני חושבת שליטה עזרה לו בכך רבות. כך אהבה צריכה להיות: שני אנשים שמשבחים אחד את השני  ותומכים זה בזה.

סטארבייס 972: איך היה לעבוד עם ארמין שימרמן ואייברי ברוקס ("סיסקו")?

צ'ייס: אהבתי לעבוד עם ארמין. הוא היה כל כך תומך, במיוחד בי ובמקס. כאשר דבר מה לא היה ברור באחת הסצנות, הוא הסביר בלי בעיות. למשל, לא הבנתי למה הבמאי רצה שליטה תהיה "קלילה" בהתנהגות שלה ב-Let He Who is Without Sin…, אז ארמין הסביר לי שזה כדי שהיא תהיה ניגוד לוורף, שהיה מאוד קודר בחלק הראשון של הפרק. היו המון פעמים שבהם הוא היה עוזר ואני מאוד מעריכה זאת. לארמין יש לב רחב. אייברי היה מאוד שקט, סגור בעצמו. זו הסיבה שלא יצא לי כל כך להכיר את אייברי. אבל הוא תמיד נחמד כשאנחנו מתראים בכנסים.

Mrs. Masterson refers to "Stardust", a convention organized by Starbase 972 every year during Passover. Due to Mrs. Masterson's busy schedule, the interview is brought to you in two pieces. The rest of the interview will be uploaded as soon we receive Mrs. Masterson's answers.

Starbase 972 hopes this interview is the first of many such projects that will be made in the future, and is grateful to Mrs. Chase Masterson.

Starbase 972: Shalom Chase Masterson, we're proud to have you with us!

Chase: Thank you, so much, subatoi and team! I want to say, first, that I am so very sorry that I haven't written sooner. I actually have been out of town for several weeks, and I didn't realize that you were wanting this interview for your Passover convention, "Stardust". I've enclosed a link to part of what I've been doing, promoting a new movie called "Creature Unknown", which I'm the lead in.

This week I was also out of town singing in a new film, "Take Out." I've been singing a lot lately, especially songs from my new CD, "Thrill of the Chase". Anyway, this movie is about the fast-food industry and how unhealthy it is, especially in America. I'm singing a song I co-wrote. I hope you'll like it, if you hear it.

Anyway, I've been traveling so much, and it's been busy in a great way, but I still apologize profusely that I am later with this than we would have liked!

My other apology is that I can't write this in your language. My brother is a minister and speaks some Hebrew, and I've always wanted to learn. From everything I know and have studied, Israel is such a beautiful country and I hope that sometime soon we will be able to visit, and that there will be peace. I am praying that you will have it. You deserve it.

Starbase 972: Leeta started as a four-sentences character, and continued for five seasons. What do you  think about how she evolved?

Chase: I feel very blessed about how Leeta evolved, from a hard-working Dabo girl, to the wife of the Grand Nagus. I think the writers make very Star Trek-like choices. Although Leeta started out very girlish and flirty in "Explorers", she has compassion for Rom and stood up for the union in "Bar Association".  Then Leeta made a strong choice in leaving Dr. Bashir, the gorgeous British doctor, and falling in love with Rom, who was only pretty on the inside. The Trek writers love to have the "underdog" (American slang for least likely person) win, and I think that's something we can all relate to.

Quark often put Leeta down and insulted her for being brainless, but even throughout Leeta's relationship with Rom, she made strong choices, such as to share money, to be separated from Rom on the day of their marriage, etc. I feel good about getting to show that although Leeta was "just a dabo girl" she had intelligence and savvy capabilities, in addition to compassion and depth, which are even more important.

Starbase 972: Would you change anything about Leeta or her life, had you had the chance?

Chase: I think it would have been great to go further with Leeta, but the writers only had time for so much with each character before the series ended. I joke about her becoming Captain Leeta–stranger things have happened in Star Trek–!;-) Who knows, maybe she and Rom will show up on Enterprise?

Starbase 972: What do you miss about working on DS9?

Chase: I miss being with the cast and crew, very much. It was a group that really worked well together, really cared about each other. Much of the crew had been together since Next Generation, and they had a lot of history. The chemistry with the cast and crew was very special, and the producers get a lot of credit for being able to pick people who work well together.

I also miss seeing the other actors' work, just like you might miss them. Armin was such a delight to watch, and Max was so genuine as Rom, I would stay until the end of the day to watch the others work, even if I was finished, even if I had gotten to the set at 4 o'clock in the morning, which what time I usually started make-up.

Starbase 972: What is your favorite episode in which you participated?

Chase: I'm still figuring out what to say on this one!

Starbase 972: Usually on TV and cinema, the characters are pretty and find a husbandwife that are alike. Rom was different. He was there, usually to make us laugh, he wasn't pretty (since he is a ferengi) and wasn't so clever either. How do you explain the producers' choice of making the two of you a couple, despite of all this?

Chase: I think the producers made a choice that wasn't predictable, and I think it worked for both the comedy and drama of the show. For Leeta to stay with Dr. Bashir would have been boring, I think, way too "Barbie and Ken", you know?

Also, as I said, for Rom to get a girl, especially one who was with the cute doctor, was a fun thing which no one would have predicted. Rom was scary looking, but it's the inside of a person that counts, and I like that the writers emphasized that. Rom needed a little confidence in order to be all that he could be, and I think that Leeta gave him that. That's how love should be, two people refining each other and supporting each other.

Starbase 972: How was it working with Armin Shimerman and Avery Brooks?

Chase: I loved working with Armin, he was so supportive, especially to Max and me. When there was something we didn't understand about a scene, he explained it. For instance I didn't understand why the director wanted Leeta told to be so "light" in her attitude in "Let He Who is Without Sin…" Armin told me it was for contrast to Worf, who was very dark in the first part of the episode. There were lots of times he was helpful, and I truly appreciate that. Armin has a great heart. Avery was more quiet, kept to himself. I didn't get to know Avery as well then, but he's always very nice when I see him at conventions.

Starbase 972: Thank you, Chase Masterson!
