סטארבייס972: שלום לקלודיה כריסטיאן, אנו שמחים לארח אותך.

קלודיה: שלום לכולם בסטארבייס 972, אני ממש מצפה בכליון עיניים להגעתי לישראל!

סטארבייס972: "בבילון 5" היתה הסדרה הראשונה שבזמן שידורה היה לה מערך פאנדום פעיל. איך היה להיות בעלת בסיס מעריצים (הכוונה למעריצי "איבנובה היא אלוהים") בזמן שכל הרעיון היה חדשני ביותר?

קלודיה: הפאנדום באינטרנט היה דבר נהדר. מדי פעם היינו מצ'וטטים בזמן אמת מהסט של "בבילון 5". בדרך כלל חילקו אותנו לזוגות והיו מצפים לטוב. הייתי רוצה להאמין שהשיחות האלו היו דבר מיוחד בזמנו.

סטארבייס972: מדוע לדעתך איבנובה זכתה למעמד של מעין אלילה מבין הדמויות?

קלודיה: אני מאמינה שאיבנובה היא דמות כה פופולרית מכיון שהיא בעלת רבדים רבים. היו לה יכולות ברורות אך מאוד עמוקות וכן היו לה פגמים אישיותיים… היא אינה מושלמת ואנשים יכולים להזדהות עם זה. אם ברצונך לקרוא לה "אלילה", בבקשה!

סטארבייס972: מה מצא חן בעיניך בדמות של איבנובה שגרם לך להחליט לגלם אותה? האם היו דברים שלא מצאו חן בעינייך בדמותה?

קלודיה: אהבתי את הכח והאינטליגנציה שלה. מאוחר יותר גיליתי שיש לה חוש הומור נהדר וחוכמה. ככל שהמשכנו בתוכנית, גיליתי יותר ויותר עד כמה היא מעניינת ושיש בה רבדים רבים. האמת היא שלא היה דבר שלא אהבתי בה או לשחק בה… טוב, נו, אולי המדים בעונה הראשונה, הם היו עשויים מצמר ומאוד לא נוחים.  🙂

סטארבייס972: האם מלכתחילה הוגדר שאיבנובה היא יהודייה, או שגילית זאת רק כשהתעורר הצורך בתסריט? מה חשבת כששמעת על כך לראשונה?

קלודיה: איבנובה היתה מוגדרת כיהודיה כבר מההתחלה וזה כיוון שאהבתי בה. אני לא זוכרת שאי פעם ראיתי דמות ראשית יהודיה במדע בדיוני.

סטארבייס972: אילו תגובות קיבלת על גילום דמות יהודייה? חיוביות? שליליות?

קלודיה: מעולם לא שמעתי דברים שליליים על כך ששיחקתי דמות יהודיה למרות שם משפחתי! הלכתי, כילדה בקונטיקט, לבית ספר יהודי והיו לי בעיקר חברים יהודים, השתתפתי באינספור בת ובר מצוות וכן נישאתי ליהודי, כך שזה רק הגיוני. לא כמו מרלון ברנדו ששיחק סיני ואינדיאני!

סטארבייס972: בניגוד ל"מסע בין כוכבים" שהרחיקה את בני-האדם מכל דת בעתיד, "בבילון 5" לא חששה לשמור על הדתות למרות שמדובר בערך באותה תקופה בעתיד. ראינו את איבנובה, אפילו ראינו רב בפרק או שניים. האם לדעתך זו החלטה נבונה להשאיר את הדת?

קלודיה: אני חושבת שהדת היתה חלק בלתי נפרד מ"בבילון 5" ואני שמחה שהם הדגישו זאת.

סטארבייס972: מדוע החלטת להיות שחקנית?

קלודיה: תמיד הייתי שחקנית ואיני יכולה להעלות בדעתי לעשות משהו אחר. אהבתי זאת מהרגע הראשון שהייתי על הבמה. אהבתי לתקשר עם הקהל.

סטארבייס972: איך הגעת לקריירה מוזיקלית?

קלודיה: תמיד אהבתי מוזיקה ואני מוזיקאית מתוסכלת. מכאן הגיעו האלבומים.

סטארבייס972: כיצד נולד הפרויקט המוזיקלי שלך עם עמיתייך ל"בבילון 5"?

קלודיה: ביל מומי ("לניר") היה הגורם שמאחורי האלבום Trying to Forget וזה היה הצלחה מסחררת!

סטארבייס972: התנסית עד היום בכתיבה, משחק, בימוי, שירה ואפילו דיבוב דמויות מצוירות. מה הכי מצא חן בעיניך ומדוע?

קלודיה: המשחק אצלי תמיד במקום הראשון.

סטארבייס972: בחזרה ל"בבילון 5" – מדי פעם יש דיבורים על פרויקט חדש של "בבילון 5". מה ידוע לך בנושא כיום, והאם תרצי להשתתף בפרויקט כזה?

קלודיה: שמעתי שמועות על סרט, אך אז שמעתי שהם מתכוונים ללהק שחקנים שלא הופיעו בסדרת הטלויזיה, דבר שנראה לי קצת מוזר ואז שמעתי שהפרוייקט נפל. אם הם אי פעם יחליטו לעשות עוד סדרה, כמובן שאני ארצה לשחק את איבנובה מאשר לתת למישהו אחר את הכבוד!

סטארבייס972: אם יהיה פרויקט עתידי של "בבילון 5", יהיו חסרים לכם שני אנשים יקרים ואהובים – ריצ'רד ביגס שהלך לעולמו לפני כשנתיים ואנדראס קצולאס, שהלך לעולמו ממש לאחרונה. מה תוכלי לספר לנו עליהם?

קלודיה: ריצ'ארד ביגס היה אדם נפלא וחם ואנדראס היא איש מעניין ומוכשר ביותר. שניהם חסרים מאוד כמו גם טים קאוטה, ששיחק את זאת'רס, שנהרג בתאונת אופנוע. כולנו אהבנו והערכנו אותם.

סטארבייס972: האם היתה אוירה משפחתית על הסט של "בבילון 5"? האם משהו מזה נשאר בשנים שעברו מאז? אתם עוד בקשר?

קלודיה: הסט של "בבילון 5" היה הדבר הכי קרוב לסט המושלם ביותר שחוויתי ויש לי זכרונות נהדרים וחיבה רבה לצוות ולשחקנים. אני שומרת על קשר עם כמה מחבריי השחקנים.

סטארבייס972: אנשים רבים מתעניינים לגבי ג'יי מייקל סטרזינצקי (JMS). איך הוא, ואיך היה לעבוד איתו?

קלודיה: JMS הוא אדם מאוד מעניין והיתה לי הנאה צרופה בכל שבוע לקרוא את התסריטים החדשים. זהו אכן אדם כשרוני ביותר האוהב את עבודתו.

סטארבייס972: פרוייקט "בבילון 5" גילם בחובו מסר של תקווה. בסוף העונה הרביעית, בפרק Deconstruction of Falling Stars רואים כתובית שבה כתוב:
"מוקדש לכל אותם אנשים שצפו שפרוייקט 'בבילון 5' ייכשל במשימתו. התקווה תסתדר"
מה דעתך על אנשים אשר שואבים כח ממילים כאלה? האם "בבילון 5" היא סתם עוד תוכנית טלויזיה או האם היא משהו מעבר לכך?

קלודיה: אני חושבת ש"בבילון 5" היתה מה שהיתה לאנשים בכל מיני דרכים. היו אנשים שדיווחו שחייהם השתנו, שנגעו בהם, שקיבלו השראה… שמעתי על ילדות שדיברו על בטחון עצמי מוגבר בגלל שבסדרה היו דמויות נשיות חזקות, וכן שמעתי שאנשים צפו בתכנית על ערש דווי, כך שלא, אני לא יכולה להגיד לאנשים אלה שזו רק תכנית טלויזיה. ברור שהתכנית השפיעה על הרבה אנשים ועשתה טוב לרובם.

סטארבייס972: ממה את הכי נהנית בכנסים?

קלודיה: אני הכי אוהבת לפגוש את המעריצים.

סטארבייס972: כיצד נוצר המופע שאת מעלה בכנס עם דין האגלנד?

קלודיה: לילה אחד, דין ביקש ממני לעזור לו במהלך תכנית האלתורים שלו וזו היתה הצלחה וכיף לא נורמלי. הקהל משתתף באופן פעיל, כך שאל תהיו מופתעים אם תקראו לבמה!

סטארבייס972: האם ביקרת אי-פעם בישראל? האם יש לך חששות להגיע?

קלודיה: זו הפעם הראשונה שלי בישראל, ולא, אני לא מפחדת.

סטארבייס972: למה את מצפה בביקורך בארץ ובכנס?

קלודיה: אני מקווה לראות חלק מהמראות היפים שקראתי עליהם ולפגוש את המקומיים אשר שמעתי שהם חמים ומאוד יפים!

סטארבייס972: את בטח כבר יודעת שאת מגיעה לכנס שמתקיים במהלך חג הפסח. כבר שמעת שתצטרכי לאכול מצות?

קלודיה: אני אוהבת את האוכל שמוגש באופן מסורתי בפסח כך שאני חושבת אני אהיה בגן עדן!

Actress Claudia Christian will be a guest at Olamot 2006 convention next month. Starbase972 is proud to bring an interview with her, in which she talks about herself, Ivanova, Babylon5 etc.

Starbase972: Shalom Claudia Christian, we’re happy to have you with us.

Claudia: Shalom everyone at Starbase 972, I'm really looking forward to coming to Israel!

Starbase972: Babylon 5 was the first sci-fi show to be aired with constant online fandom. How was it to have an online fanbase (i.e. Ivanova is God) when it was a true novelty?

Claudia: The online fandom was a great thing. Every once in a while we would do live chats from the actual sets of B5. They would usually pair us up and hope for the best! I would like to think that it was very unique for the times.

Starbase972: Why, in your opinion, Ivanova was the one main B5 character to become a kind of a goddess?

Claudia: I believe that Ivanona is a popular character because she is so multi faceted. She has strengths that are obvious but also very deep and personal flaws… she is far from perfect and people can identify with that. If you want to call her a "Goddess" be my guest!

Starbase972: What did you like in Ivanova that made you decide to portray her? Were there things you didn’t like?

Claudia: I liked her strength and intelligence. I later found her to have a great sense of humor and wit. As the show progressed I found her becoming more and more interesting and deeply layered. There was not really anything I disliked about her or about playing her at all… well maybe the uniform in the first season! It was wool and terribly uncomfortable. 🙂

Starbase972: Was Ivanova’s character defined as Jewish from the beginning or only when the script demanded it? What did you think when you first heard about it?

Claudia: Ivanova was always defined as Jewish from the beginning and I loved that aspect of her. I couldn't recall ever seeing a leading Jewish character in sci-fi.

Starbase972: What were the reviews you received about portraying a Jewish character? Were they positive? Negative?

Claudia: I never heard anything negative about me portraying a Jewish character in-spite of my last name! I went to a predominantly Jewish school as a kid in Connecticut and had mostly Jewish friends, attended countless Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and also married a Jew so I think it made sense. Not quite like Marlon Brando playing a Chinese man and an American Indian!

Starbase972: Unlike Star Trek, which didn’t give the humans in the future any religion, Babylon 5 wasn’t afraid to keep the religions though it’s in about the same time period in the future. We saw Ivanova and even saw a Rabbi once or twice. Do you think it was a good idea to keep the religion?

Claudia: I think the religion was an integral part of Babylon 5 and I am happy they made a point of it.

Starbase972: Why did you decide to become an actress?

Claudia: I have always been an actress and can not even imagine doing anything else. I loved it from the first moment I was on stage. I loved connecting with the audience.

Starbase972: How did you make it to a musical career?

Claudia: I have always loved music and am a frustrated wannabe! Hence the albums.

Starbase972: How did the musical project with you and your Babylon 5 colleagues begin?

Claudia: Bill Mumy instigated the album "Trying to Forget" and it was a blast!

Starbase972: Up till today, you have experienced writing, acting, directing, singing and even dubbing animated characters. Is there a favorite out of this list and why?

Claudia: Acting will always be my favorite.

Starbase972: Back to B5 – occasionally, there are rumors about a new B5 project. Do you know anything about it, and would you like to be a part of it?

Claudia: I have heard rumors of a feature but then I heard that they were planning on casting actors who were not in the TV show which seemed a bit strange but then I heard that the project fell through. If they ever decided to do another show of course I would prefer to play Ivanova then have someone else do the honor!

Starbase972: On the off chance that there will be such a project, you’ll have to manage without two beloved cast members – Richard Biggs who passed away about two years ago, and Andreas Katsulas who passed away lately. Can you tell us a little about them?

Claudia: Richard Biggs was the most wonderful, warm beautiful man and Andreas was a massively talented, fascinating man. They are both very much missed as is Tim Choate who played Zathras who died in a motorcycle accident. They were all loved and appreciated by all of us.

Starbase972: Did you have a sense of family on the B5 set? Was something left of it in the years past? Are you in contact?

Claudia: B5 was the closest thing to a perfect set I have ever experienced and I have great memories and fondness for the cast and crew. I do keep in contact with a few of my fellow cast members.

Starbase972: Many people are interested in J. Michael Straczynski. Can you tell us how was he as a person and how was working with him?

Claudia: J.M.S. is a very interesting fellow and it was a great joy to read the new scripts every week. A hard working and talented man indeed.

Starbase972: The Babylon 5 project essentially has a message of hope to it. In the end of the 4th episode "Deconstruction of falling Stars" there is a caption that says:
"Dedicated to all the people who predicted the Babylon Project would fail in its mission. Faith manages."
What do you feel about people who draw strength from these words? Is Babylon 5 just a TV show or is it something more?

Claudia: I think that B5 was what it was to many people in many different ways. Some people report their lives changing, being moved, being inspired… I have had little girls talk about believing in themselves more because of the strong women characters and I have heard of people watching it on their death bed so no, I cannot say to them that it was just a TV show. It clearly meant a lot to a lot of people and did a lot of good for most.

Starbase972: What do you enjoy most on conventions?

Claudia: I enjoy meeting the fans the most.

Starbase972: How did the show you’ll perform on the convention with Dean Haglund start? Please tell us about it.

Claudia: Dean asked me to help him during his improv show one night and it was a great hit and a lot of fun. There is a lot of audience participation so don't be surprised if you're called upon!

Starbase972: Have you ever been to Israel? Did you have any fears about arriving here?

Claudia: It's my first time in Israel and no, I am not fearful.

Starbase972: What are you looking for in your visit in Israel and at the convention?

Claudia: I hope to see some of the beautiful sights I have read about and meet the locals whom I have heard are warm and very beautiful!

Starbase972: You probably know by now that the convention will take place during Passover. Did you hear about the Matzes you’ll have to eat?

Claudia: I love all of the food traditionally served at Passover so I think I will be in heaven!

Starbase972: Thank you, Claudia. We’re looking forward to seeing you.
