סטארבייס972: שלום טים ראס, אנחנו גאים לדבר איתך.
עמיתך וחברך אית'ן פיליפס אמר עליך "במובן מסוים, אני חושב, יש לו את התפקיד הקשה ביותר בתכנית מכיוון שיש לו רוחב פס כה קטן שבו הוא צריך לעבוד כל הזמן". שחקנים רגילים לבטא את עצמם כאשר דמותם מפגינה רגשות. אפילו שחקנים עם מסכות יכולים לעשות זאת. לך אמנם לא הייתה מסיכה, אך לדמות שלך היתה מגבלה רצינית – בה אסור לה להפגין רגשות. האם זה באמת הפריע לך או שמצאת דרכים אחרות להתבטא?

סטארבייס972: באיזה פרק לדעתך טובוק הפגין את מלוא הפוטנציאל שלו? האם זה גם הפרק האהוב עליך?

טים: הפרק Gravity היה פרק טוב. אך בפרק Meld אנו רואים צד בטובוק שבדרך כלל לא היינו רואים וניתנה לי הזדמנות להראות טווח יותר גדול של רגשות. אחד הפרקים האהובים עלי הוא Future's End כי היה כיף לצלם אותו. הפרק היווה הפסקה נחמדה מהשגרה.

סטארבייס972: האם העובדה שזכית לגלם וולקן כהה-עור ובכך להראות שגם בקרב הוולקנים קיימים צבעי עור שונים, היתה בעלת משמעות מיוחדת עבורך, בתור אפרו-אמריקאי?

טים: זו היתה הזדמנות לשחק "תפקיד שחור" חיובי, אינטילגנטי ומתוחכם בטלויזיה, שהוא נדיר כאן בארצות-הברית. לא היית מצפה לראות שחור משחק תפקיד כזה. היה לי המזל להזדמנות לשחק תפקיד זה.

סטארבייס972: זכית לטעום מעט מתחומים רבים של עולם "מסע בין כוכבים", מה שלא זוכים לו שחקנים רבים – הופעה על הסט עם חלק משחקני הסדרה המקורית ב"דורות", הופעה ב"הדור הבא" וב"חלל עמוק תשע", אחת מהן אמנם בתפקיד טובוק, אבל טובוק מעט אחר. גם ב"וויאג'ר" עצמה היו פרקים "שוברי שגרה" כמו Flashback עם שחקני הסדרה המקורית, Future’s End בו חזרתם בזמן למאה ה-20 ו-Unimatrix Zero בו הפכת לבורג. האם נהנית מההזדמנויות לטעום תפקידים מגוונים?

טים: כשחקן, תמיד טוב לשחק תפקידים רבים ושונים. יותר מעניין לשחק תפקידים שונים מאשר את אותו אחד לאורך זמן.

סטארבייס972: כיצד עזר לך הניסיון בבימוי, בו התחלת על הסט של "וויאג'ר", במשחק שלך? האם הבנת מה עליך לעשות להבא כדי להקל על עבודת הבמאי שאתה עובד איתו?

טים: זו היתה אחת ההטבות שבסדרה שרצה כל כך הרבה זמן. הערכתי מאוד את ההזדמנות לביים את התוכנית, דבר שקשה מאוד לעשות אם לא מציעים לך. התמזל מזלי לנצל את ההזדמנות הזו. כמו כן, תמיד עוזר שיש לך את נקודת המבט כשחקן וכבמאי כאשר מצלמים פרוייקט כלשהו.

סטארבייס972: אתה שר ומנגן על גיטרה ואף הוצאת שלושה דיסקים. ב"וויאג'ר" יצא לך לשיר ממש מעט. האם היית מעונין לשלב בין משחק ושירה יותר בעתיד?

טים: בדמות עצמה לא חסרה לי השירה בכלל. יתרה מכך, הרופא שר מספיק בשביל כל הצוות.

סטארבייס972: ספר לנו בבקשה איך נוצר הסרט Roddnberry on Patrol, בו היית מעורב כבמאי, מפיק ואף שחקן. כיוון שכמעט כולם הכירו את כולם, זה היה כמו לעבוד עם חברים, לא?

טים: הסרט נכתב על יד זוג כותבים שהמפיק, Sky Douglas Conway, מצא. עבדנו על התסריט, עשיתי כמה שינויים ומחיקות והם עשו אותו דבר ובסוף הגענו למוצר מוגמר. אהבתי את הרעיון והתסריט מהרגע הראשון.

סטארבייס972: מדי פעם שב ועולה הרעיון ליצור סדרה או מיני-סדרה שתעקוב אחר הרפתקאותיהם של קפטן סולו וקומנדר ראנד על ה"אקסלסיור". מה דעתך על הרעיון והאם היית מעוניין להצטרף אליו?

טים: עוד לפני שייצרו קשר עם צוות השחקנים בכדי להתחיל פרוייקט חדש, כולכם כבר תדעו עליו. ואם יגיע זמן שכזה, ואני אהיה פנוי, אז רוב הסיכויים שאלך על זה, כי בכל זאת זוהי… עבודה.

סטארבייס972: באילו פרויקטים הינך מעורב בימים אלה?

טים: כיום אני עובד כאמן דיבוב, מופיע כשחקן אורח בתוכניות טלויזיה, מביים סרטי תעודה לערוץ דיסקברי, נח ונהנה מהחיים ומנגן בשתי להקות שונות.

סטארבייס972: ולסיום – האם תהיה מוכן להגיע כאורח לאייקון, כנס המדע-הבדיוני והפנטזיה הגדול שלנו?

טים: תלוי במה שיוצע לי וגם אם אהיה פנוי באותו זמן. בדרך כלל אני פנוי בקיץ, אבל שוב, זה תלוי בפרטי הנסיעה, השכר וכו'.

We are proud to bring a short interview we had with Mr. Tim Russ, who portrayed Voyager's Tuvok, and appeared on TNG, DS9 and Generations as well.

Starbase972: Shalom Tim Russ, we're proud to have you with us!
Your colleague and friend Ethan Philips said about you “In some ways, I think, he has the most difficult role on the show because he has such a small band width within which he has to work all the time.” Actors are used to express themselves when their character shows emotions. Even actors who wear masks can do it. You didn’t wear a mask but your character had a serious limitation – it couldn’t express feelings at all. Did it really bother you or did you find other ways to express yourself?

Tim: It did get a little monotonous after the 4 year mark, doing a lot of the same type of dialogue on the bridge for example, and it was not as exciting as an actor no, because you study acting for years to be able to portray emotions… But, by the same token opposite of the "human" characters was also at times fun.

Starbase972: Did you feel the great responsibility when it was decided that you will portray the first Vulcan since Spock? Did you understand better the burden, the expectations of audience, as someone who had watched the original series?

Tim: I was somewhat concerned about portraying the character accurately for the fans, but my first concern was satisfying the producers, because if they hadn't liked what I did in the pilot I would have been out of a job very quickly.

Starbase972: On which episode in your opinion Tuvok showed his full potential? Is it your favorite episode as well?

Tim: “Gravity” was a good episode, but "Meld" showed a side of Tuvok that no one would normally have seen, and I had a chance to show more of a range of emotions. One of my favorites was “Future’s End”, as it was a lot of fun to shoot. It was a nice break from the routine.

Starbase972: Does the fact you got to portray a black Vulcan, and thus show Vulcans too had different skin colors, had any special meaning for you, being an Afro-American?

Tim: It was a good opportunity to portray a positive, intelligent, sophisticated black role on television, which is rare here in the States. It was a role you would not normally see a black actor playing. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to do that.

Starbase972: You had the opportunity to taste a little of many aspects of the Star Trek universe, unlike many actors. You were on set with part of TOS’ crew on "Generations", you were on TNG and DS9, one of them as a little different Tuvok. Even on Voyager you had such opportunities, as Tuvok – with part of TOS’ crew (Flashback), a Time Travel to the 20th century (Future’s End) and even an episode you got borgified (Unimatrix Zero). Did you enjoy the opportunity to taste diverse roles?

Tim: As an actor it's always a good thing to play many different parts. It's far more interesting to play different roles, than to play the same role for long periods of time.

Starbase972: How did the directing experience you purchased on Voyager’s set help you in your acting? Did you understand what you need to do in order to make the life of the director you work with easier?

Tim: That was one of the benefits of being on a long running series. I really appreciated the chance to direct on the show, as that is extremely difficult to do if you're not offered the chance.
I was very very lucky to be able to take advantage of the opportunity. And it always helps to have both the actor's and director's perspectives in shooting a project.

Starbase972: You sing and play the guitar and had three CDs. On Voyager you sang only a little. Would you have liked to combine acting and singing more in the future?

Tim: I didn't miss singing as the character at all. Besides, the Doc did enough singing for the whole crew.

Starbase972: Please tell us how the movie Roddenberry on Patrol, in which you were involved in directing, producing and even acting, was created. Since almost everybody knew everybody, it was like working with friends, wasn’t it?

Tim: It was written by a couple of writers that the producer, Sky Douglas Conway had contracted. We went over the script, and I made a few cuts and changes, and they did the same and we came up with the final project. I liked the script and concept from the very beginning.

Starbase972: There’s an idea to make a series or miniseries about Captain Sulu and Commander Rand’s adventures on the Excelsior. From time to time it resurfaces. What is your opinion regarding this project and would you like to join it?

Tim: The day they contact the cast about doing another project, you all will already know about it.
If that time comes, and I'm available, then I'll probably do it, it is after all… work.

Starbase972: What projects are you involved nowadays?

Tim: I am currently working as a voice-over artist, doing guest roles on television shows, directing docudramas for Discovery Channel, and TLC, and playing music in two different bands.

Starbase972: And finally – will you consider arriving one day as a guest in our biggest sci-fi convention, Icon?

Tim: It would depend on the deal, and whether I was available on those dates. I usually have some time in the summer, but it would depend on what the details of travel, fee etc. were.
